It’s safe to say that there’s something about Essaouira, Morocco’s weather-beaten and whitewashed coastal jewel. The town, protected from the wild Atlantic Ocean by 18th century fortifications, has a laidback and unrushed feel to it that has attracted travellers for decades. In fact, many have never left, and hence the town has an excellent range of restaurants, guest houses and companies offering activities in the area. It’s one of our favourite places in Morocco and should be seen as Morocco’s best coastal performer in terms of its range of possibilities to suit a range of tastes. Read on for a selected list of places to stay and things to do and please enquire for more options.

Itinerary : Essaouira Day trip

The hustle and bustle of Marrakech quickly slips away as you enter into the peace and beauty that is Essaouira. This ancient citadel on the West Atlantic coast of Africa literally means “walled city” in the Berber language, it’s also the most specially attractive to those who wish have a nice time and enjoy a precious moments, and you’ll soon discover why. Visitors from all over the world come here to experience the very special weather, and explore its diverse and unique history. Your day trip will start from your hotel or riad at 08:00 h. from Marrakech we drive through lush valleys filled with orange groves, ancient olive trees and working farms as we drive through the coast. After a short while, we arrive in Chichaoua, where we can take a short break for not only a coffee, but also our team is ready to stop for you whenever and wherever. Once you have had the chance to refuel a bit, we will continue on, soon coming upon our first signs of the Argan trees. These special trees are valued for their nutritive, cosmetic and numerous medicinal properties. The tree, a relict species from the Tertiary age, is extremely well adapted to drought and other environmentally difficult conditions of southwestern Morocco, and while now endangered, they are protected by UNESCO. After your morning travel, you arrive to Essouira, where you will have the chance to wonder the ancient streets and imagine what life has been came before us. The streets have a genuinely Portuguese feel, after they renamed the city in the 16th century and used it as a port city of their own. Here you can dine on fish straight out of the sea at any number of local restaurants, and can even have a camel ride in the beach if you want! After a full day of sightseeing, we return comfortably to your hotel.
